Bullying Abbas into Talks

The Palestine Authority and Israel have been talking face to face for close to 20 years but to no avail, the main reason being Israel’s unwillingness to concede anything. In fact, it is unclear whether Israel can embrace any solution that leads to a Palestinian state, given the phenomenal proliferation of Jewish colonies on the West Bank.

INSPIRATIONAL CINEMA

In the cool summer evening air of the Jerusalem hills last Tuesday evening, hundreds of Palestinians and Israelis descended on the small village of al-Walaja for a screening of the critically acclaimed documentary Budrus. The screening was jointly organized by Israelis and Palestinians who are working to non-violently resist the construction of Israel’s separation barrier on the village’s land. The screening bore special significance for the people of al-Walaja as the film follows the story of a West Bank village’s unarmed struggle against the construction of Israel’s separation barrier on its farmland and its subsequent success in having the route of the wall changed.

West Bank Bedouins worse off than Gazans

The UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) found that in Bedouin communities like al-Hadidiya, rates of stunting are more than double those in Gaza. Almost half the children have diarrhoea, one of the biggest killers of children under five in the world, and three quarters of families do not have enough nutritious food.

Lying About the Gaza Flotilla Disaster

It's been one lie after another in the US media about the Israeli attack on the Gaza-bound relief flotilla. No matter that the Israeli media views the whole incident as a debacle for Israel, in this country the Israel-can-do-no-wrong crowd is on overdrive defending the operation. As usual, facts don't matter to them.

Except they do.

Flotilla Tactics: How an Israeli Attack Backfired

These techniques are regularly used in attacks on protesters, most obviously in dramatic cases such as in the 1960 Sharpeville massacre in South Africa and the 1991 Dili massacre in East Timor. The same sorts of techniques are also found in all sorts of other injustices, including censorship, sexual harassment, police beatings, torture, war and genocide. Therefore, it is predictable that the Israeli government, in its attack on the Free Gaza flotilla, would use the same techniques - and that is exactly what happened.

Could it be that a most explicit Palestinian calling of Israel’s bluff would create the understanding needed in America to free up President Obama (after the mid-term elections in November, of course) to take on and defeat the Zionist lobby, for the sake of peace in the Middle East and best protecting America’s own real interests in the region and the wider Muslim world?

Chas Freeman – Nixon Center debate, “Israel; Asset or Liability?”

Is Israel a strategic asset or liability for the United States?

Interesting question. We must thank the Nixon Center for asking it. In my view, there are many reasons for Americans to wish the Jewish state well. Under current circumstances, strategic advantage for the United States is not one of them. If we were to reverse the question, however, and to ask whether the United States is a strategic asset or liability for Israel, there would be no doubt about the answer.

ROBERTS: The Last Bastion of American Morality Is Under Assault

The morality of the American people now resides, insecurely, in the Presbyterian Church. Every other institution of American society — the evangelical churches, the bought-and-paid-for American media, both houses of Congress, the executive branch, both political parties, the corporations, the financial sector, the universities — all support Israel’s genocide against the Palestinians. Only the Presbyterians dissent.

The genocide is cloaked behind the propaganda that no Palestinians lived in Palestine until after the Israelis arrived, that all Palestinians are terrorists who want to murder innocent peace-loving Israelis, and that the terrorist Palestinians are armed by the few remaining Muslim governments that so far have escaped becoming American puppet states.

‘Humanity and Humanity’ by Richard Falk [Youtube Poetry]

For: My Catbird Seat
Humanity and Humanity, is the first of a series of poems written and narrated by Richard Falk

Richard Falk, author of Human Rights Horizons, The Pursuit of Justice in a Globalizing World, delivers a profound message that needs to be heard. He evokes and reminds us of the fundamental principles of humanity. In so doing, he awakens our spirit of compassion and guides us towards a kinder, gentler world.

Poetry, such as this, based upon the leveling and humbling of humanity, is not going to be popular with the Western Press in this day and age, regardless of its merit as art.

It is unfortunate, but Ezra Pound was right in his Cantico del Sole.

Challenging Christian Zionism

Our critique is offered at two levels: 1) theologically, challenging what we believe to be a distorted interpretation of biblical eschatology which transforms the Prince of Peace into a Vengeful Warrior God. 2) Politically, as we recognize that the theology shaped by this distorted view of scripture too easily morphs into a militaristic, anti-Palestinian, pro-expansionist ideology with negative consequences for all parties in the current conflict.

The victim wasn’t armed, yet Mizrahi shot him to death. In 2009, Mizrahi was sentenced to a mere 15 months in prison. He appealed to the Israeli Supreme Court, and said there that the shooting was intentional and that his life was not in danger during the event. Yet, he insisted he acted out of self-defense. For being illogical, his sentence was doubled to 30 months in July 2010. Yet, this is dirty cheap for a cold blood assassination. Beware of Jewish Slappers

Jewish racism knows no boundaries. Though many people of many ethnic origins live between the river and the sea, the Jewish State is not exactly a multi- cultural society. The Israeli legal system is racist to the bone; it is a true mirror of Jewish supremacy and Talmudic tribalism. The Guardian continues to follow the astonishing story of Saber Kushour, a young Palestinian man who was convicted of rape after having consensual sex with a Jewish Israeli woman who had believed him to be a fellow Jew.

Jul 25 09:15

CONSENSUAL RAPE or UNCONSENSUAL RACEMIXING … WHICH IS THE CRIME UNDER APARTHEID?

There has been much ado in the Israeli press about a Palestinian man being charged with rape after the Jewish woman involved found out he was an Arab.

There was less ado about the fact that the man is married …. a fact that makes this incident quite ugly in my opinion. Does the sanctity of marriage mean nothing today? Are the vows one takes merely words?

This raises just one question: What would the court decide had a Jewish, married man falsely presented himself to a woman in order to get her into bed? For example, what if someone like that told a woman that he is a wealthy single man, while he was in fact poor and married? Would he too be convicted of rape?

With “peace talks” between the Palestinian Authority and Israel seeming more and more like a dead end, many people around the world, including dissident Jewish voices, are turning to grassroots activism to pressure Israel to end the ongoing occupation of the Palestinian territories.

PROPHETIC IDEALISM

Through prophetic idealism, the handwriting is already on the wall, and walls cannot and do not last for eternity. And since prophetic idealism (or at least idealism) has not yet been declared a crime, in place of a wall there will only be wholeness and healing, restitution and truth, love and forgiveness, economic and political security, and unity and strength. “I have seen the future and it runs through here,” that is, the Israeli-Gaza/West Bank Walls and a new era of peace with justice.

'Israel needs war to exist'

A former Israeli lecturer has said the entity depends on wars for its existence, warning that the hostility only invites disaster for Tel Aviv.

It is only constant confrontations and standoffs which keep the Israeli society from falling apart, said Ilan Pappe, who used to work as a senior lecturer at the University of Haifa in northern Israel.

He also said that the current Israeli government is the result of a colonialist movement. Colonialists, who did not have a country anywhere across the world, were obliged to remain here.

RAMAKRISHNAN: Mahatma Gandhi rejected Zionism

Australians for Palestine – Providing a Voice

Gandhi’s major statement on the Palestine and the Jewish question came forth in his widely circulated editorial in the Harijan of 11 November 1938, a time when intense struggle between the Palestinian Arabs and the immigrant Jews had been on the anvil in Palestine. His views came in the context of severe pressure on him, especially from the Zionist quarters, to issue a statement on the problem. Therefore, he started his piece by saying that his sympathies are all with the Jews, who as a people were subjected to inhuman treatment and persecution for a long time.

Gaza Strip has been under siege since June 2007, when Israel declared it an "enemy entity". A group of international activists organized a siege-breaking movement, the Free Gaza movement. Thanks to their efforts, and despite the Israeli ban on foreign correspondents and humanitarian aid workers to cover and witness operation "Cast Lead" on the ground, a group of international volunteers: self organised members of the International Solidarity Movement were present in Gaza when the bombing started on December, 27th 2009. Together with two international correspondents from Al Jazeera International (Ayman Mohyeldin and Sherine Tadros), they were the only foreigners who managed to write, film and report for several radio stations what was happening inside the besieged Palestinian strip.

A Freedom Charter or A Second Nakba? By Kenneth O'Keefe

Imagine this, imagine that Nelson Mandela and the African National Congress negotiated a deal with the South African Apartheid regime and settled for a “two-state solution.” Imagine Mandela negotiating with the Apartheid regime a land deal in which less than 15% of current day South Africa went to the black South Africans, the remaining 85% to the inherently racist Apartheid government and its people.

With that in mind, I ask, is there any real difference between that scenario and the idea of a “two-state solution” today?

Stuart Littlewood reviews ‘This Time We Went Too Far’ by Norman Finkelstein

Special for My Catbird Seat

“The Gaza invasion marked the climax of Israel’s descent into barbarism”

Quite simply, this is a cracker of a book and very timely.

In explaining how Israel’s war on Gaza in 2008/9 was not the defensive action it is always painted, Norman Finkelstein recalls the 1947 UN partition of historic Palestine and remembers how, in 1957, US President Eisenhower forced Israel to withdraw from Gaza by threatening sanctions and in the 1967 war Israel re-occupied it.

The book then takes us through the warm-up for the 2008/9 war and the subsequent whitewash.

Palestinian Children Under Occupation

Palestinian children grow up "under the Israeli occupation, surrounded by cruelty, oppression, killing, starvation and destruction." Yet, like all children, they dream of playing and living normally and safely. Instead, their father may be dead or in prison, their brother killed, their home destroyed, and their mother forced to give birth at an Israeli checkpoint, risking her and the newborn.

Palestinian children grow up differently from most others, their development "distorted by an occupation," destroying their innocence, dreams and well-being. They live in constant fear, forced to grow up while still a child.

Turkish FM met Hamas supremo in Damascus

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu met with Hamas supremo Khaled Meshaal in Damascus, Anatolia news agency reported Tuesday, a move that threatens to fan fresh tensions with Israel.

The two men met on Monday to discuss efforts to heal the rift between Hamas — the resistance militant group controlling the Gaza Strip — and the Fatah faction of Palestinian leader Mahmud Abbas.

The Middle East peace process was also on their agenda, Anatolia said.

The meeting took place amid simmering tensions between Turkey and its one-time ally Israel over the killing of nine Turks on May 31 in an Israeli raid on a Turkish ship that was part of a flotilla carrying aid to Gaza.

Israel has reacted angrily to previous contacts between Turkish officials and Hamas.

"A couple of board members were concerned about what will be the financial effect on the organization, but it’s minimal," board member Rob Richards told Haaretz. The Other Tragedy

News coming from Iran everyday are not even one millimeter away from their announced position to uphold their just rights to peace and development, but they include a new element: they have already managed to produce 20 kilograms of 20 per cent enriched uranium –an amount enough to produce a nuclear artifact-, which is making all those who long ago decided to attack them to go even crazier. I discussed this with our ambassadors on Friday 16.

On The Israeli Right's New 'Peace' Agenda by Gilad Atzmon

As the Israelis are becoming conscious of their inevitable tragic circumstances, a final desperate attempt to rescue the Zionist project has come to life. Astonishingly enough it is the Israeli right that is now pushing for ‘one binational State.’ It is pretty staggering to find out that while the Israeli so-called ‘left’ is locked within the 1967 territorial paradigm that is fueled by Judeo centric racial ideology, it is actually the hawkish Zionist thinkers who are willing to move the discourse forward.

The Co-op becomes the first US grocery store to publicly join the international grassroots movement for boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) on Israel for its human rights abuses.

Co-op board member Rob Richards explained, “My hope is that by being the first in the US to adopt the boycott we act as a catalyst for other co-ops to join in. Each additional organizational entity that joins may have a very small effect on the big picture, but drop by drop fills the tub.”

Sayanim — Israeli Operatives in the U.S.

Americans know that something fundamental is amiss. They sense—rightly—that they are being misled no matter which political party does the leading.

A long misinformed public lacks the tools to grasp how they are being deceived. Without those tools, Americans will continue to be frustrated at being played for the fool.

When the “con” is clearly seen, “the mark” (that’s us) will see that all roads lead to the same duplicitous source: Israel and its operatives. The secret to Israel’s force-multiplier in the U.S. is its use of agents, assets and sayanim (Hebrew for volunteers).

THE ‘POLITE’ ANTI SEMITES IN OUR MIDST

Q…
Why would a supposedly Pro Palestinian Blogger devote herself to the defamation of Jews involved in the Palestinian cause?

A…
They wouldn’t!

The person’s aim is openly to disgrace the entire cause and make it appear as if Palestinians and their supporters are anti Semites. This is not the case at all …. only the zionists themselves attempt to make that an issue. The aim may not be openly disgrace the cause. The problem is a confusion of issues to the point that one doubts what the aims are, because if they don’t have real arguments, they effortlessly fall into the same exact traps that the zionists do, using the same racial profiling techniques, and focus on the messenger and not the message.

The main focus of the talks in Cairo was to convince the Palestinians and Israelis to move from, until now, largely fruitless "proximity" or indirect talks to direct negotiations.
